skywatch

January 12 stone~

nose pressed to the glass
my unwavering gaze is on a gray sky
while I await the arrival of a
wild white fury.

the calm before the storm~

two mornings ago something happened that rarely happens.   i had an urge to get out of bed before sunrise and head to the lake shore.    must have been a premonition - there were others there too, on skywatch.   a small group of us stood on the sand, cameras in hand, and waited for the big bald head to rise above the water.   the last time i did that was 30+ years ago; i was there to fish, and i had a thermos of bloody marys.

doesn't it appear as though the big yellow ball is liquid and spilling onto the lake?
this sunrise took what seemed like forever to unfold.    maybe it was because my fingers were freezing  (and i was wearing my winter gloves and hat).   it doesn't take much for the winds off this lake to chill your bones.    it was actually refreshing and i'll remember that morning forever.     both shots are sooc.

today i'm watching for big white.  after the longest wait ever for the season's first snow,  it's arrival is apparently imminent.    so says the weatherman.   i check my desk-top radar every minute and it's still green (rain) over my area by the lake.   the rest of the state is blue, so it IS on the way.   and the forecast is for 24 hours of snow and wind!   can you hear me jumping up and down and squealing?

head on over to Skywatch Friday and check out the skies around the planet.  you'll be glad you did.   happy thursday everyone.   i'm still waiting...

Beautiful photos that are all the more remarkable when I read that they are SOOC. Wow! I was checking the weather on weather.com and the page opened up on a big white blob over the central portion of the states and the Great Lakes region. "Snow on the way". I first thought of you. Oh goodness, that woman is going to pee her pants with joy.

Becky, I'm so glad you got out of that warm bed! What a treat to see the sun rise over water. That second photo actually makes me feel warm - even if you say it was cold! Good luck on the snow. We were minus 10 this AM and new snow on the ground from yesterday. I'm going xskiing with a friend.

Ms. Becky, both images are beautiful and that second one really does looking like liquid gold spilling into the water. I hope you're getting your longed-for snowfall! It started here about 5:30 this morning and we have several inches by now. It's about time! (Though I'm dreading the drive home at the end of the day....)

I can't wait to see your pics tomorrow (...not that these gorgeous sunrise shots aren't amazing!!!) but I know we're in for some wild white photo awesomeness :)

Beautiful photos! The winter storm deposited just a few inches of snow here in Iowa so I'm sure there is some left for your area.

Becky, that sky is so amazing - it looks like crushed red satin, and the reflection of that huge sun.... breath taking

Wow! That first image is lovely but the second is an amazing capture, glad you got out of bed.
We are still waiting for precipitation in my part of the world. Here near sea level we would love some rain but up the road in the mountains the ski area need snow. Winter snow in the mountains is our summer water supply in California.

I really understand that it was worth to struggle for the shot but also the experience to be there. You must have felt a strong fellowship with the others.

Of course I love your photos, they are really awesome!

What amazing captures--hasn't the sky outdone itself this week!?!
We've been expecting snow but only so far have rec'd frigid air and little wisps of white. Lucky, you and yours in Wisconsin!
I meant to tell you how much I appreciate your kind words about my writing. You always make my day when you visit.
Happy snowy weekend, Msie.

Wowza woo!! You need to not wait so long before you do it again. These images are amazing. I love the colors in the first one and in the second one, you timed it perfectly.
As for the (damn) snow....I hope you're getting hammered with it. We were supposed to get 3 inches and there's at least 8 in my driveway, not to mention the ginormous snowplow pile at the end-at least thigh high. I fear it will be April 15 before it is all gone. Sad for me, but happy for you.
Big hugs from Maine to the Cheese Head region.

Girl...you need more warm clothes on when you go out this early! It was definitely worth freezing for a bit to finally get that sunrise. To me, it looks like the old timey glass globes we have in this old farmhouse covering the lightbulbs hanging from the ceiling. That is one impressive shot. We, too, are waiting for the big white to arrive. The weather men are saying an inch tonight, but I will have to see it in the morning to believe. it. It is time!!!!!! genie

Truly awesome sunrise and photos. I'm so not a "morning" person so I miss out on moments like these.

That sun unfolding into the lake is amazing. So gorgeous!

And lucky you - hope the snow is beautiful! Sadly, our thin layer has already melted.

If those sights don't make you a believer, I don't know what will...beautiful!

Lovely photos, especially the one with the "liquid sun". It's amazing what you can "discover" when you break a habit and do something new. =)

Have a nice weekend!

So glad you headed out to capture this, Becky. :)

We received a tiny dusting of snow, with cold winds. I'll take it! :)

You're a braver woman than I, getting out of bed before sunrise... and yes, it does look like the sun is pouring gold into the water. Hope you're enjoying your weekend, Becky.
