shadow shot sunday

I'm not a doctor and I don't know the technical terminology, but I do know that sunshine activates our happiness glands.

~  Jessi Lane Adams

When the sun is strong and the days warm people head for the lake shore.   And that's just where I was yesterday.    I found some shadows at the ice cream stand.   I think it must be the only one that doesn't stay open year round.   Custard is very popular in Milwaukee.   Remember Arnold's  from Happy Days?   Well Leon's Custard Stand was the inspiration.  Yep, that's right.  One day I'll show you what Leon's looks like, with all the original, vintage neon.  But today all I have is photos of Northpoint custard stand that's currently closed until Memorial Day.   Hey, that's not far off.

The picnic tables were still stacked and leaning against the building.  That's a few of them there on the left.  This being Wisconsin and the Dairy State and all, they're painted black and white to resemble Holstein cows.  You all know what a Holstein looks like, right?
The lake is to the right, just out of view,  but it was mid day when these photos were taken, with the sun high overhead.   I'm glad the custard stand was closed.   I would have been tempted.   And who needs THAT?

shadow chasers gather at Hey Harriet each week.  head on over and check out the fantastic shadows from around the globe.

Well, greasy burgers and fries are a temptation. Although I say 'too bad' it was closed. Perhaps some fried comfort food on a hot day with the cooling breezes off of Lake Michigan - what's not to like with that scenario!

What a great old place. It really brings back memories of family outings, back when everyone piled into the car on a Sunday just to go for a drive.

Looking forward to seeing that neon.

I like the tones and contrasts very much in these shots. Another example of your unique style. Holstein cows. The first cow I learned the name of in grade school in a land void of cows of any type. And why did that name stick with me? Black & white. I liked it then and still do now. Now, what's with the trees? No leaves? It is springtime!

Is custard the same as ice cream? Ice cream is my #1 favorite food. I like the way you processed these with a slight sense of sepia, and that quote-absolutely true, true, true. Hope you are having a great weekend.

Yup, I do...know what Holsteins look like...although I prefer those gentle brown Jerseys!

I HAD A LITTLE SHADOW
(With apologies to Robert Louis Stevenson)

I had a little shadow
No bigger than my thumb;
I took him to the meadow
And there I gave him rum.

My drunken little shadow
Did weave and bob and pitch;
He stumbled from the meadow
And fell into a ditch!

Good old American food in a great old eatery. Love it. The black and white photograph really enhances the overall capture. IT really has personality.

Lovely, Ms Becky. You've such an eye for (great shadows and) showing off buildings and urban spaces in such a unique way. I also like the 'light sepia' effect here (I know that's not the correct term). Happy weekend to you x

What a wonderful quote about the sun - and so true! Love your shots: that ice cream parlour looks as if it has been around since the 1950s!

Wow, this brings back some meories. Not for Northpoint Custard stand, but for the place being on the lake. My Aunt and Uncle had a small store along the lake right between Racine and Kenosha, right on what is now Sheridan Road. The road ran between the store and the lake and they had a huge wood ice cream cone.
We are Italian. The store made sandwiches and sold them to travelers along with ice cream cones. Most of the business came in summer.
Brought back a great memory. All we have for custard around here is Culvers. I'll have to get to Northpoint when we come down and see the Brewers later this year.

Peace

Too funny, we too know when spring has arrived when our local landmark, THE CHERRY-TOP drive-in opens for biz...the best tenderloins and onion rings EVER...and it's just two miles from my shack and I have to drive by every day on my way home...bummer huh...but I can't resist those maraschino cherry-topped ice cream cones...ahhhh...summer, the good ol' days...!

Back to reality AND work...it's off to the hen yard to finish my run, the girls are so happy...FREEDOM at last!!!

Have a sunny, warm one...I HOPE!!!

Hi Becky,
Thanks for leaving a sweet words in my latest entry and I am sorry for being absent.
Visiting your blog is always a joy and inspiring. Last time I was here was in winter; all of your posted photos are covered with snow. Lots of snow. Now the season has proceeded and I could see lots of sunlight, which looks like early summer in my eyes! Now I see your comical photo of you in your profile, as well!:) I like it!

Please have a wonderful Sunday, Becky.

Another Wisconsinite! We went to Le Ducs in Wales for custard last night. We had to eat it in the car with the heat blasting, but it tated so good! Now, we need a heat wave and I will be really happy. Great blog...love your style!

I love the sound of a custard stand and the black and white furniture is so cool. I would love to visit Northpoint and see some cows! Lovely shadow shots...

I played for the first time and thought of you I as saw and snapped this "in the moment shot." We both seem drawn to shadow/sun lines especially when there are so many angles that its hard to tell where shadow leaves off and matter begins.

Nice post, I like the sepia treatment, it brings out the old-timey feel of the subject.

Thanks for sharing about Hawk; Ghost is the first cat I've owned who liked to walk with me, although I had one once who would walk with my step-mom after he went to live with her.

What gorgeous sepia shadows - they're making me a little hungry, tho.
Must say... I'm enjoying your updated banner as well - the pinks of springtime, with a few shadows thrown in for good measure :-D
