shadows and light

In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary.  ~Aaron Rose

    Boerner Botanical Gardens,   Milwaukee County

so here in S E Wisconsin, we're sitting on the edge - at that very spot where in just the blink of an eye,  it will be impossible to be anything but Spring.   it thunderstormed last night.    a few sunny days with warmer temperatures and the earth will warm.   and then....all tender growth will spring forth.

for the past 13 weeks, beginning in the coldest part of wintertime, and ending with the spring rains,  I've been studying to become a Master Gardener.   Every Thursday afternoon between the hours of 1 and 4 p. m.  I was sitting in a classroom at Boerner Botanical Gardens  getting a refresher on botany and soil and turf,  pesticides and rain gardens,  composting and fruit trees.   once I've volunteered 24 hours of support and/or education, my training will be complete.    ever since I was a little girl I've loved plants.   it's a joke amongst my friends that  my favorite thing to do is to sit at the garden's edge and watch my flowers grow.  and though in these "later years" I can be a bit forgetful of some things,  the botanical name of a plant or flower is instantly recalled.

now leaves are about to unfurl,  seeds will swell in this moist earth, and roots will grow deep to take hold.    then the planter will be filled.

Well! That grape arbor, even sans leaves, looks so inviting that I think I'll take a stroll. Thanks for the invitation!

EVEN IN SHADOW

Even in shadow where there is no light,
One may take comfort and one may delight
That darkness has lost its power to thrall
Those who are living on this earthly ball.

These views are wonderful - we know that each leafless vine and branch will be full of foliage, and soon. Minus any green, we imagine the full view, and await the sprout of green...

A landscape designer may be your future - in fun if not profit. A wonderful learning now will be lovely designs for us viewers later. The world awaits!

I'm loving seeing the Botanical gardens through your lens, and congrats on making your way to Master Gardener! I've only known three other such ambitious green thumbs and kindred spirits. Now, if new life will just be brave enough to poke out of the ground.
Your Skywatch photo was so uplifting and blue. More gray skies and rain over here...sigh.
I raise my trowel to you AND wish you a lovely weekend!

Oh wow, that urn is gorgeous. I can picture it overflowing with green and colour in summer.
I love that last photo. The dead looking vine, the stone wall. I love it a lot!
It's gonna be very pretty too when that vine is green. Maybe you could take another photo then and show us?
Yay for you doing that course!!!

Master Gardener. That is pretty cool. I did not know there is such a term. Well, good for you to pursue your passion and fulfill a lifelong dream. Now, can there be money made from this? :)

Wonderful Shadow Shots! I love the vine covered walkway, and the tiny shadows of the brush growing next to the planter are divine.
Congratulations on the Master Gardener designation. Such an honor, very cool, indeed.

I love both of your shadows, but for different reasons. Especially like the simplicity of the first, as it illustrates the quote to perfection. p.s. Not sure I've ever known a Master Gardener before - that's really cool!

Hi Becks,
hope you're having a nice easter sunday. i worked, boo hoo. master gardener, i'm impressed. you'd have liked the film i saw last week- "Dirt the Movie." You can see the trailer on YouTube. its just about how connected we are to the dirt (spiritually, for our food, water, etc) how we are destroying it w/ monoculture & so forth, and how we can do our part by composting, planting varied crops, getting rid of some of the concrete in our cities and such. A very nice film!
happy week to you too!

Becky, Congrats on Master Gardner!!! Beautiful shadow!
You have a green thumb! Trees, flowers always give me energy. Just walking through trees, I hear whispers of breeze or birds and feel close to nature.

Here in Nara, thunder is rumbling and rain started.

That's why we have to stop what we're doing when we see it, when everything is lined up for a shot. It will never be quite the same again.

Becky that is so beautiful. How wonderful that you're training to be a master gardener! Plants are my passion too. I spend as much time as I can out in the garden.

Two magnificent shadow shots. I love the quote! Yes, it's all about the light and the right time. And absolutely backup, backup, backup! (I saw a t-shirt that said, "Backing up is for sissies.")

And congrats on the Master Gardener thing. My mom was one and loved it.

I'd just like to be any kind of a gardener. Not my best field of skill. Nice photos!
