shadow shot sunday

Honey Wax   Kiki Smith  1995    wax and pigment

for this week's shadow shot I'm bordering on bizarro charro.  this is a work by sculptor Kiki Smith, taken during my last Milwaukee Art Museum visit.  isn't it weird?   but I find myself liking it.   it has the distinction of being dubbed one of those "troubling nudes".

"when, as in the sculpture of Kiki Smith and the painting of Julie Heffernan, the naked body is a prop for the isolated self -- the instrument of an allegory of narcissistic injury and vulnerability, at once ideological and personal in import -- it makes no sense to speak of nakedness or nudity as its essence.......
In modern art, the distinction between naked and nude has lost the weight it had back when representing the body was a moral act: the transcendentalized nude, with its perfect body, was a symbol of goodness and beauty -- ideals to be striven for -- while the realistically naked body, with all its blemishes, imperfections and grossness, was inherently immoral -- the ugly body of the fallen, sinful Adam or Eve, the antithesis of the saved soul rising to heaven".     (from artnet.com)

and from the artist herself -

"I miss radicality—in my own work and in the art world. The art world seems very product-dominated, and I’m a product maker. But it’s not as interesting an art world now. It’s not as determined by artists themselves. When I first came to New York you really had to work at it. It wasn’t given to you. I miss that a little bit. I would like to be more outside of things, but it’s just not my personality at all."

interesting stuff, no?

That's wax? Pretty weird, yes. Even the shadows are strange.

Given the lighting, the this one nude seems to morph into three, at least in shadow. Is he relaxing or scared into a sort of fetal position. Weird maybe, although we see lots of things here. If art compels us to think and imagine, 'weird' works very well, indeed!

Interesting? Yes, yes, yes!!!! And YES again! And beautifully made. I love this post, Becky. I'm a fan of Smith. Have her on my list as "artist of the week" on TPS.

Did you take this shot or find it online? In any case, I'm so happy you posted it. And all the information in the post is right up my alley.

Have a great weekend and thank you again and again for discovering my blog, as I am now fortunate enough to be a regular reader of yours.

Simply stunning, really forces you to conjure up all kinds of strange notions about what was going on in the artists mind...and in us, well it gives us time to ponder...what!

Great shadow Miss Becky...and great art work, love the artist's comments too...I just love art, as well, you too!

Certainly a sculpture to ponder as I can only imagine why the sculpture is in that position. The light shining on it makes fabulous shadows from a couple of directions!

Gee, why don't someone help the poor man up? It reminds me of those figures frozen in death at Herculaneum by the volcanic of Vesuvius. Would make a nice art piece addition to the front yard.

Hi Miss Becky ... WOW! It is a great shadow shot, that is for sure. The person looks a bit tortured to me. Thanks for stopping by to say hello!

Weird or not, the shadows are great!

FRAGMENTS OF LIGHT

Since shadows are fragments of light,
Most gracefully they can take flight
And soar through the air
(They do this, I swear)
As though they were some sort of kite.

OK, here's what I know about sculpture
Can you hear the nothingness?
I didn't see this as naked/nude, but more form-someone raw. I don't know if I "like" it, but it causes one to ponder, so that's good.
As for the shadows, they are very cool and give the form even more form. Great post.

The Milwaukee Museum is a wonderful jewel as is this piece. Did you see the Art in Bloom exhibit last weekend? Very cool!

This shadow shot made me look a second, then a third, time...the lighting makes the one figure cast at least three shadows, all different. Very nice!

Magnificent sculpture. It makes me think one of the positions I assume when my back is in spasms.
